NoirNet - The Neon Enigma

About the game

Runemark Studio is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of NoirNet – The Neon Enigma, an immersive detective game set in a vividly realized cyberpunk world. As an innovative experiment in game development, NoirNet extensively utilized AI tools ChatGPT and Midjourney during its creation to enhance the game’s narrative and art.

In NoirNet – The Neon Enigma, players become a hacker detective in 2077, tasked with solving intriguing cases that all tie back to an enigmatic figure known as ‘The Broker’. Players will decrypt hidden messages, delve into the shadowy underbelly of a neon-lit city, and unravel a complex mystery woven into the game’s narrative.

ChatGPT was used to write the game’s text content, including police reports, research logs, dialogues, and character backgrounds. This resulted in more robust and engaging narrative content. Meanwhile, Midjourney created character profile pictures and other 2D art for the game, leading to a distinct and appealing visual style.

Set for release on Steam in Q2 2023, NoirNet – The Neon Enigma demonstrates the potential of AI tools in independent game development, paving the way for enhanced content creation. For more information, visit the official website or the Steam page.

About the developer

Adam Galla is a seasoned game developer with a rich background in tabletop and live-action RPGs and a love for dissecting and understanding the mechanics behind games. His fascination with game development blossomed from his hobbies, perfectly merging with his formal education in software development.

A freelancer for nearly a decade, Adam has accumulated much experience across multiple game projects. While his primary role has been that of a programmer, his close collaboration with his wife, a 3D artist, in their joint venture as Unity Asset Store Publishers has expanded his skills to include an understanding of visual elements such as art, composition, and lighting.

The idea for NoirNet – The Neon Enigma was born out of a One Game A Month game jam challenge, where the theme was “A Mix of Old and New.” It represented a departure from Adam’s usual preference for 3D games with third-person viewports, leaning more towards the RPG genre. The shift was both refreshing and exciting, providing a much-needed change of pace during a challenging period.

NoirNet presented unique challenges, especially in maximizing the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney. The AI’s inconsistency and overactive “imagination” required Adam to embrace iteration as the key to success. The result was a game that offered players an immersive experience as futuristic detectives, interacting with intriguing characters in a detailed cyberpunk universe.

In the future, Adam plans to continue leveraging AI tools in his game development projects. Despite their limitations and caveats, he believes in their potential to significantly enhance game development. His ongoing journey as a game developer reflects his love for games, drive for innovation, and commitment to providing unique gaming experiences.
